FROM BOARDROOM TO GROUND: MEGA BOARD TAKES OVERSIGHT INTO THE HEART OF MPUMALANGA’S DEVELOPMENT FOOTPRINT
Two-day site visit puts strategic properties, investment opportunities and development progress under the microscope.
Mbombela, Mpumalanga – 3 September 2026 – For the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency (MEGA) Board, oversight is not confined to boardroom papers, presentations and progress reports. Sometimes, it means getting into the field, walking the sites, seeing the infrastructure first-hand, listening to those on the ground and asking the questions that matter.
That is precisely what the MEGA Board is doing this week as it embarks on a two-day Board Oversight Site Visit from 3 to 4 September 2026, taking its oversight responsibilities directly into the Agency’s development footprint across Ekandustria, Loopspruit Farm, Siyabuswa and surrounding areas.
The visit provides the Board with an opportunity to move beyond reports and engage directly with the physical assets, development initiatives, management teams, tenants, stakeholders and investment opportunities that form part of MEGA’s economic-development mandate.
At the heart of the exercise is a simple but important question: Are MEGA’s strategic assets being positioned to create greater economic value for Mpumalanga?
The two-day programme is designed to help the Board answer that question from the ground up.
EKANDUSTRIA: LOOKING AT WHAT EXISTS AND WHAT COULD BE
The first leg of the visit, taking place on Thursday, 3 September, focuses on Ekandustria, one of MEGA’s strategic industrial properties in the Nkangala Region. The Board will receive an overview of the current status of Ekandustria, including key developments and
refurbishment initiatives, before engaging management through questions and discussions on the Properties &Infrastructure Division’s presentation. But the real assessment begins beyond the presentation room.
The Board will undertake a physical inspection of the Ekandustria Industrial Park, looking closely at its utility services infrastructure, factories, security enhancements and vacant land including areas where new development proposals are being considered.
It is an opportunity to see both sides of the property story: the infrastructure already in place and the development potential still waiting to be unlocked.
From there, the Board’s oversight journey moves to Loopspruit Farm, where it will be introduced to a potential investor and receive an update on current developments at the farm. The engagement will provide an opportunity for the Board to interrogate the investment opportunity, understand progress and engage on the presentations before continuing with its site-based assessment.
SIYABUSWA: CONNECTING ASSETS TO LOCAL ECONOMIC ACTIVITY
On Friday, 4 September, the Board will take the oversight visit to Siyabuswa and surrounding areas, where the focus shifts to the Agency’s regional footprint and the economic activity taking place around its assets.
The programme will begin with an engagement at the Siyabuswa Regional Office, where the Board will receive an overview of key development initiatives in and around Siyabuswa, followed by discussions and questions on the Properties & Infrastructure Division’s presentation.
The Board will then take its assessment into the field through a drive and walk-through of the Siyabuswa Industrial Park, including engagements with selected tenants.
The visit will also include the Siyabuswa Shopping Centre, further allowing the Board to observe the performance and potential of MEGA’s property portfolio within the local economic landscape.
OVERSIGHT THAT LOOKS, LISTENS AND ACTS
For MEGA, effective oversight is more than measuring performance against plans. It is about understanding the realities behind the numbers.
A site visit allows the Board to see infrastructure conditions for itself, engage with management and stakeholders, understand operational challenges and identify opportunities that may not always be fully captured in a report.
It also creates a direct feedback loop between strategy and implementation – between what is planned in the boardroom and what is actually happening on the ground.
The two-day visit therefore represents more than an inspection of properties. It is part of MEGA’s broader effort to ensure that its strategic assets are actively managed, properly positioned and capable of contributing to investment attraction, economic activity, enterprise development and sustainable growth in the province.
As the Board moves from industrial facilities and vacant development land to agricultural investment opportunities, regional offices, industrial tenants and commercial property, the underlying objective remains consistent: to understand what MEGA has, what it is doing with those assets, what is holding them back and where the next opportunity lies.
UNLOCKING THE VALUE OF MPUMALANGA’S ASSETS
The Board Oversight Site Visit comes at an important juncture for MEGA as the Agency continues to position its property and development portfolio as an active instrument for economic growth.
The engagements at Ekandustria, Loopspruit Farm and Siyabuswa will provide the Board with first-hand insight into progress, challenges and opportunities while strengthening its ability to provide strategic direction and hold the organisation accountable for delivery.
Ultimately, the value of an asset is not simply measured by its existence. It is measured by what that asset can unlock.
A factory can become a business.
Vacant land can become an investment.
Infrastructure can become economic activity.
An agricultural property can become an investment platform.
And a regional asset can become a catalyst for local development.
This is the lens through which the MEGA Board is undertaking its two-day oversight visit.
By taking oversight beyond the boardroom and into the places where economic development is expected to happen, the Board is reinforcing a culture of accountability, active governance and evidence-based decision-making.
The site visit ultimately supports MEGA’s continued efforts to unlock the economic potential of its strategic assets and ensure that the Agency’s development footprint contributes meaningfully to the lives and livelihoods of the people of Mpumalanga.
