The Donkerhoek Water Bottling Plant is owned by a 22-member cooperative in Mkhondo Local Municipality. The R9.9 million plant is a fully-equipped state-of-the-art facility funded by Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDT). DEDT appointed MEGA as the implementing and coordinating agent of the project to steer it toward full commercialisation.
The Donkerhoek Water Bottling Plant has a capacity to bottle 20 bottles per minute or 48 000 bottles per day. It operates on two eight-hour shifts with at least fifteen workers on the production line per shift.
The water is bottled at source and is tested and analysed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in accordance with the South African National Bottled Water Association (SANBWA) requirements. The bottled water is certified by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).
A project steering committee comprising of officials from DEDT, MEGA, the Department of Public Works Roads and Transport, National Development Agency, Small Enterprises Development Agency, SABS and the National Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) has been established.
